Continue to Take Action on Poverty!

In order to keep up the momentum of awareness and action on poverty generated by Poverty Week, we've compiled a list of ways you can continue to get involved in the fight against poverty.
THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF THE LIST - Please check back often as we'll be adding to this list over time. Also, if you have any other suggestions, let us know!

Global/National Organizations to check out and get involved with:

First a few quick and easy ones:

Poverty.com - a website that gives quick and easy to understand summaries of the major problems contributing to poverty. You can also download an print a letter to send to each (a differnt letter for each) of the countries that have not yet delivered on their 0.7% aid - including Canada! Send a letter today!

Free Rice - a website that helps you your English vocabulary, and for each word you get right, the sponsors donate 10 grains of rice to help end world hunger. It's extremely addictive and fun, plus you know you're making a real difference.

The Hunger Site - this is a simple click-to-donate site, where sponsors donate cups of rice each time you click on the button on the main page. Only one click per day allowed, but there are several related sites such as the breastcancer site and the literacy site, and you can click on each site's button once a day.

Follow-up from Week of Action on Poverty

Thank you so much to everyone who got involved in the Week of Action against Poverty in some way!

Here are some pictures of the week. If you have any more pictures, please send them to us and we'll post them - ulethstudentactioncollective@gmail.com

The combined Student Action Collective and Campus Women's Centre table

The week was kicked off with a performance by the University of Lethbridge Steel Band!

Tables by various groups...

Participants in the Stand Up moment - over 120 of them! University of Lethbridge President Bill Cade is reading the Poverty Pledge at the front.
Overview:
The week was a success, with lots of postcards to Ed Stelmach signed, 127 food donations, 96 jackets, and around 97 signatures on the giant letter to Stephen Harper - and of course, over 120 people Standing Up on Oct 17th (FYI there were 38 million people who stood up worldwide - and we were a part of that!). Also, we got lots of press coverage, which was excellent!

As well some great talks (although not as many people were present to hear them as we could have hoped) on Tuesday and Thursday at lunch, as well as Wednesday evening at our speakers event.

And one last time I'd like to thank LPRIG for the funding they gave us which made the event possible, and also thank you to the Campus Women's Centre and Rotaract (our two most-involved groups!), as well as to all the groups on campus and off who had displays or were involved in some other way.

We will be posting a list of organizations to hook up with and other ways to get involved and continue to take action here very soon, so please check that out, and continue to take action on poverty!

Thanks again to everyone for their involvement!

We Are the Student Action Collective!

The Student Action Collective was started by Chris Michell and Sharon Wadi in the summer of 2007. We are a group of students who care about social and environmental justice issues, and want to make a difference at the University of Lethbridge.

We see too much apathy in the face of so many pressing issues, so we have decided to take action! Some of the many issues that concern us are: poverty, racism, homophobia, war, HIV/AIDS, climate change, democracy, and daycare.

We hope you'll join us! Please join our mailing/discussion list by sending an email to studentactioncollective-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and/or join our group on Facebook (search Lethbridge Student Action Collective).
To reach the executive, please send us an email at ulethstudentactioncollective@gmail.com

Please check back often to see if we have an event coming up!
